Self Guided Tour of Former Schoellkoph Power Station 3 Complex

On June 7th 1956 two-thirds of the Schoellkoph power station was destroyed in a series of rockslides.  After the destruction of the power station the Niagara Power Authority started construction of our current hydro electric power project.

However, some of the old Schoellkoph power station still remain.  I had an opportunity recently to visit the site and I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area that is looking for something more off the beaten path.

The site is run as a free self guided tour.  To start the tour you will need to locate the ground level elevator located just outside of the Niagara Gorge Discover Center 200 Robert Moses Pkwy N, Niagara Falls, NY 14303.

Be sure to grab a self guided tour pamphlet before proceeding in to the elevator. Also be sure to note the hours of operation as the elevator only operates during the scheduled times.  Otherwise you will be forced to hike the trail to return to the top of the gorge.

Here are some pictures from the site:

brought water from the top of the gorge to the turbines.

Congratulations To The Happy Couple

Well it is official.  Jim and Pam are married.   I have been patiently waiting for this episode of The Office to air since they filmed here in Niagara Falls, NY back in August 2009.  I was very pleased with how the episode showed our area.  During the scene where the arrive at Niagara Falls they show several attractions but the names do not appear.  The first is the Seneca Niagara Casino.  The next thing that is featured is Snow Park Niagara which is a snow park that operates year around using generated snow during the summer time.  Then of course is the hotel that Jim and Pam stay at which is called the Statler Falls Hotel.  In real life this hotel is known as the Red Coach Inn which is in real life a Historic Boutique Hotel.  All of the interior shots of the hotel used in The Office episode Niagara were filmed on a sound stage.  The real interior of the hotel is much nicer than what is portrayed in the episode.  The Red Coach Inn is a very small hotel in real life so they may not have availability but you can still enjoy a nice dinner in their restaurant.
The final attraction during the episode is the Maid of the Mist which is a half hour boat ride the puts you right in front of Niagara Falls.  I now invite you to come to Niagara Falls and see these attractions for yourself.  Please see my Travel Information page for all the details on how to get here.

Get really close to the Falls and feel the power (Mid April-Oct)

The Maid of the Mist is one of the most popular attractions in Niagara Falls.  People have been experiencing the power of Niagara Falls since 1846 onboard The Maid of the Mist. I highly recommend experiencing it for yourself.

One of the reasons you probably came to this site is because Niagara Falls was the location where Jim and Pam from the television show "The Office" got married. The scenes depicted in the show were filmed onboard the Maid of the Mist on  August 30, 2009. If you would like to have the same kind of experience start planning your trip today!

The Maid of the Mist is located in the Niagara Falls State Park (See Map).  There are several options for parking,  but be sure to check out the Helpful Money Saving Tips section for alternative free parking near the Falls.

The best pizza you will ever eat (Oct - June)

Did you ever visit somewhere only to find out later that you missed out on one of the hidden gem's of the area. Pizza Oven on Niagara Street near the corner of 19th Street in Niagara Falls is just such a place.  Pizza Oven offers some of best pizza you will ever have.  The menu is simple.  Pizza.  You can purchase it by the slice or by half or full trays.

If you only hit one of the attractions I mention on this website, Pizza Oven should be it.  They have very limited hours.  They are only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11am - 8pm.  They are Cash Only/Take Out Only! Delivery service is NOT available and they are completely closed from July - Sept.  If you wish to place an order you can call them at (716) 282-6838.

Please be advised that if you are trying to place an order during the month that they reopen (October) you may not be able to get through.  They sometimes take the phone off the hook due to the large number of orders and walk in customers.  During the opening rush, I have had to stop in, place an order and then come back and pick it up 1 - 2 hours later.  IT IS WORTH IT!  Once the initial rush has slowed you can call and get a pizza in about 45 minutes.

They are located at 1903 Niagara St in Niagara Falls (See Map)

Turn an old coal silo into a restaurant, add majestic views of the Niagara River and serve great food and you have a recipe for success (May-Sept)

A popular restaurant is the Silo located on the Niagara River water front in Lewiston, NY. The Silo opened in 1998 and has been serving a summer menu with choices ranging from a Sahlen's Hot Dog to Beef on Weck. Top off your meal with a big glass of Aunt Rosie's Loganberry (a Western New York favorite) and enjoy the great views that the Niagara River has to offer.

The Silo is currently closed for the season

The Silo Restaurant is located at 115 N. Water St, Lewiston, NY (See Map)

Bread and doughnuts so good, you will want to take them home in your suitcase

The title may cause you to laugh, but the truth is I cannot visit out of town relatives without bringing them DiCamillo's original homemade Italian Curly Bread and Peanut Doughnuts. The bread is made fresh without any added preservatives and it melts in your mouth. The DiCamillo family has been making their famous bread and desserts the same way since 1920.

They have 5 locations throughout Niagara Falls and the surrounding area. Before you go feel free to download their online coupons.
